BSL Level 6 Summary
The Signature Level 6 Certificate in British Sign Language (RQF) qualification will develop the learner’s language skills towards complex language use of the National Occupational Standards for Languages Instructus 2012, or C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Upon successful completion of this qualification, the learner will be able to use and understand complex BSL in all types of social and professional interaction.
The assessment criteria for this qualification are based on the UK Occupational Language Standards at complex language use. Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will be able to demonstrate language skills equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Modern Languages.
Topics
The Level 6 Certificate course has been redesigned to enable you to use and understand complex BSL in all types of social and professional interactions.
Teaching and assessments are focused around eight topics. Which are:
Education
Employment & Business
Media
Finance
Politics and Law
Society
Medicine
Science & Technology
You will be expected to demonstrate receptive and productive skills on these topics in a variety of two-way and one-way interactions. This includes informal 1-1 discussions, group debates, formal group meetings and discussions, presentations and a receptive skills exam.
Your performance will be measured through six assessments. Half of these will be assessed internally by our team of assessors and the other half will be filmed and externally marked by Signature assessors.
Methods
Candidates must demonstrate both receptive and productive BSL skills at level 6, and in all of the eight topics that make up this qualification. Internal and external assessments may cover any of the topics listed in this qualification.
The natural context of using BSL is in two-way interactions (discussions, conversations, debates etc.), as well as one-way interactions (monologues, presentations etc.). The candidate is therefore expected to demonstrate receptive and productive skills in both two-way and one-way interactions.
Assessments
Assessments take place during normal class time and the assessment fees are included in the course price.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must possess Signature/CACDP Level 3 in BSL and at least one year’s experience integrating within a Deaf environment and attending Deaf events.
Students will be assessed to determine their ability to meet the required specifications for this course through a pre-course assessment. This includes constructive feedback to help you progress and develop as a BSL user.
Progression Routes
After successfully completing this course, you should be ready to embark on the Level 6 Diploma in either Sign Language Interpreting or Translation.
Remark offers a range of interpreter training courses, taking you through to registering with the NRCPD as a Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI). More information on our Interpreting Courses is available here.
