What is a Deafblind Interpreter?
A Deafblind interpreter is a person who is trained and qualified to act as a communication link between a Deafblind person and other people, using the Deafblind person’s preferred method of communication. This can be:
Hands on interpreting – an adapted version of British Sign Language (BSL) where the Deafblind person feels what’s being signed by placing their hands on top of the signer’s hand
Visual frame signing – an adapted version of sign language where the person communicating signs in a smaller area to match a Deafblind person’s field of vision
Deafblind manual – a system of spelling out words on the palm of the Deafblind person’s hand
Tactile signing – a form of sign language where the Deafblind person feels the signs on their hands
Gestures, props, or drawing – other ways of conveying information visually or tactilely
A DBI can also help the Deafblind person with accessing information from various sources, such as emails, calls, letters, or documents. A DBI can also provide cultural or contextual information that may be relevant for the communication.
When do you need a Deafblind Interpreter?
You may need a DBI if you need to communicate with a Deafblind person who:
Has a combination of sight and hearing loss that affects their ability to communicate, access information and get around
Has different levels of vision and hearing loss that may change over time
Uses different communication methods depending on the situation or the person you are communicating with
Wants to have equal access to information and services that are available to other people
A DBI can help a Deafblind person to communicate with other people more effectively and respectfully, and ensure that their rights and choices are respected.
