Sign Language Week Day 1
Sign Language Week 2023 is here!
We are super excited this week. Why? Sign Language Week is here!
Sign Language Week is an annual event that celebrates the Deaf community, their language, and their culture. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of BSL and its significance in the UK. This year's Sign Language Week will take place from the 13th (today!) to the 19th March 2023 and its theme is “Protecting BSL”.
This year’s theme is “Protecting BSL”
The aim of the campaign is to encourage people of all ages across the UK to take up the challenge of learning BSL for themselves and to find out more about the language and culture of the Deaf.
BSL week provides an opportunity for the Deaf community, and Deaf led companies like Remark!, to celebrate their language, and to showcase the importance of BSL to the wider community. Sign Language Week is full of a range of activities, including workshops, events and classes, and this year is no exception.
Remark! are passionate about breaking down the barriers between hearing and Deaf communities, and Sign Language Week is a chance to bring this challenge to the foreground. Communication barriers can be anywhere and everywhere, and include difficulties accessing education, employment, and healthcare, as well as worsening problems with social isolation and exclusion.
BSL Week is here to raise awareness of these issues, by highlighting the importance of BSL, and at Remark! we are encouraging more people to take action to address these concerns. Sign Language Week also offers an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture within our Deaf communities and that is something Remark! has always championed.
build a more inclusive and accessible society, protecting, promoting and preserving the language of BSL.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of BSL and the need to ensure that Deaf people have equal access to information and services. During the pandemic, many Deaf people faced difficulties accessing important information, such as updates on government guidelines and restrictions. BSL Week 2023 will be an opportunity to reflect on the impact of the pandemic on the Deaf community, and to consider how we can build a more inclusive and accessible society, protecting, promoting and preserving the language of BSL.
This week here at Remark! we will be posting a blog EVERY day for Sign Language Week, providing you with lots of entertainment and lots of information!
Sign language week has it’s origins within the BDA over 20 years ago! One of the main aims the BDA had when first setting up the event, was to encourage more people to learn BSL. As one of leading training centres in the country for BSL, Remark! know first hand the rewarding experience learning BSL can be, and how it can open up new opportunities for communication and social interaction.
Why not come along to our free BSL Class and learn new skills or even be the start of a new career!
BSL Week 2023 is an important event, not just for the Deaf community, but for all communities across England. The week provides an opportunity to celebrate the Deaf community within the UK, to protect, preserve and promote the use and learning of BSL, and to raise awareness of the barriers that Deaf people face. It is a chance to build a more inclusive and accessible society, and to ensure that the language and culture of the Deaf community is celebrated and valued.
