Follow Herbert as he empowers
the Indonesia Deaf Community
Herbert Klein has many years of experience working within the Deaf Mental Health field. Now he has retired he is going on a voluntary mission for 6 months to help train up staff and set up projects in Indonesia. He is also looking at the disaster recovery plan for Indonesia to include deaf people.
Remark! are sponsoring by covering his expenses such as travel within Indonesia, accommodation, food and some training rooms etc where there are none freely available. This support is for Herbert and also support for his small team who are working with him for 6 months. We want Herbert and the team to focus on the good work he is doing and setting up the Training rather than worrying about fundraising while he is on the trip.

United Nations & Disaster Risk Reduction Conference @ Bali
Herberts explains how this conference deliberated actions to reduce disaster risk for the most vulnerable, including Indigenous Peoples, women, youth, and persons with disabilities. He discovered many emotive stories from Deaf people who had first-hand experiences with disasters, and also met a real-life Deaf rescue specialist which lifted Herbert’s heart.
Herbert visits a Deaf Village and was shocked
Herbert was expecting a lively village full of happy and signing Deaf people as there would be no isolation in a Deaf village. The reality is the Deaf community lived in extreme poverty and did hard labour from dawn till dusk ours just to survive day by day.

Herbert finds out the low levels of Deaf people getting an education
Herbert is at this Deaf school in the Deaf village, he is very proud as he follows the story of the only Deaf Teacher in the school. She explains “Here, Deaf people are seen as stupid. They can’t read or write.” A determined character saw her overcome many challenges in her quest to be a Teacher. She has contributed to the education of 60,000 profoundly and severely Deaf children.
Tsunami
Herbert is in Aceh learning how the 2004 Tsunami truly wrecked the lives of millions of people. Many mental scars was created in the Deaf Community, it will take time and support to deal with their experiences.

Herbert found this unique culture where it’s more tranquil and more accepting of Death. Family ties were stronger as family memories are cherished more as everyone would grow up hearing about great stories as told by their Great Grandfather who they will also pass on to their children. I have noticed more positive mental health compared to other regions - maybe this is why?

Herbert visited Palo and to see the how the Deaf community was holding up from a huge disaster that occurred on the 28th September 2018. Herbert was swept away by how dreadful this disaster was. In particular, 2 brave women had overcome the psychological effects of the event. They visited the disaster site, where they had once lived with their families. But despite having lost their homes, they survived, against the odds. A truly incredible story.
A major driving force in empowering Deaf people is Deaf businesses which often employ Deaf people which in itself is a huge mental wellbeing boost having a job and earning your own keep.
Herbert showcase two very different Deaf business, hopefully there will be more of those success stories. Enjoy!
