 Being a BSL Interpreter is a rewarding profession
yet it can be a demanding and challenging role.

Reality Check

Being a BSL Interpreter brings huge responsibility and skilled professionals are always in high demand. Currently there is a shortage of qualified BSL Interpreters and demand outweighs the supply. The average booking time for an interpreter is usually 3-4 weeks.

 
 
 

There are 151,000 BSL users in the UK with just 1397 BSL interpreters and 236 Trainee interpreters.

 

Long Journey

It takes 7 - 10 or more years to become a fully qualified BSL interpreter

 

BSL is a complex and rich visual language which has its own grammar independent from English.

Understanding and honouring the professional code of ethics which underpins the integrity and trust of the Deaf community and BSL Interpreters is paramount.

BSL Interpreters are regulated by the NRCDP who have the power to strike off a BSL Interpreter if found to be in breach of its codes of conduct.
