Summary

Sexual health and orientation affect us all at some point throughout our lives yet, despite it being a fundamental building block of being human, it is often a taboo topic not openly talked about outside of banter. Sexual activity as a function expands the human population. It can also be fun and pleasurable yet, it can have the power to destroy lives.

When we think about sexual health, we might automatically think of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and getting ourselves checked for these at a Sexual Health clinic however, sexual health is much more than that. It’s about sexual identity, the law, consent, contraception, abuse and how we conduct ourselves in relationships.

This session will provide a background to all the elements mentioned above with an emphasis on both the fun and serious aspects of sex as well as a look at what goes on in a Sexual Health clinic. We will explore different LGBTQIA+ terms and definitions.

We will look at case studies and attendees will be encouraged to think about being ‘sex positive’ – as an exploration of promoting a healthy and realistic attitude to sex.

We will also explore and examine the role of the interpreter in a sexual health setting and how the interpreter can be utilised to best effect by both NHS staff and the deaf client/patient.

A range of potential situations/dilemmas arising from this setting, the choices and coping strategies for these will be discussed. The deployment of skilful interpersonal approaches will be looked at together with the very real fact that the deaf client/patient may need the interpreter for communication but may not want their presence in this setting or aspects of the setting/conversation.

Examples of domain-specific terminology will be explored and discussions around the translation/visual representation of these, particularly where no specific BSL sign exists and/or the topic is new to the client/patient.
