Transcription is the name given to a text version of a video. There are two ways to do this, from English Audio to English text, or from BSL video to English text.
Audio to English:
A skilled transcriber will listen to the programme and type a verbatim transcript of the programme content.
BSL Video to English:
A qualified BSL interpreter will watch the BSL and create a translated transcript of what has been said. This is a very skilled process - staff need to be experienced in the nuances of BSL and how to translate them into English. In BSL there are multichannel signs – these are whole sentences encompassed in one sign and can have many different meanings depending on the previous and subsequent signs.
Transcription provides an accurate record of the content of a video and forms the basis of access options such as subtitles and voiceover.
Translation are accustomed to being front of camera, but recently a rare opportunity arose
