CSW & Interpreters |

As interpreters, our job is to be proficient in two languages. We have all spent time and money on sign acquisition, vocabulary, fluency and articulation; yet when we use English, most often our Mother Tongue, we don’t tend to stop to think why we choose to use certain words or even what we mean when we use them. This course challenges us to look at the way we speak when we interpret and to consider ways of making ourselves clearer and more precise. Through discussion and activities, we will learn what we mean when we talk about ‘good English’, and what strategies we can use to make sure that we are using it. We will look at some of the more common grammatical mistakes and look at tips on making ourselves easier to understand and listen to. We will explore how the English language has developed, where words have come from and how they have changed over time. This course will remind us that English is a core skill and encourage us to improve. It will make us more aware of our current standard of English, highlight unexplored areas for growth, and provide us with the tools to develop and enhance our skills. |
