BSL Level 6 NVQ Certificate

The new Level 6 NVQ has now replaced the NVQ4.  Whilst the contents of the units remain the same, the learning outcomes and assessment criteria have changed to match the new UK Occupations Language Standards (2010).

There are no levels 4 – 5.  This is to make it clear that the Level 6 NVQ in BSL is equivalent to a BA Honours degree.

The Level 6 NVQ is divided into two units:

  • Language Development
  • Portfolio Building

Language development
During this unit you will be taught to understand complex BSL in the context of a range of work and social situations.

Course overview

  • You will be trained in how to extract complex information from a wide
range of sources, even when it is delivered at speed.
  • You will become comfortable with a range of regional variations, formal
and informal language, relevant technical vocabulary and colloquialisms.
  • You will understand how to take part in negotiations, and deal with
         complaints, problems or disputes.
  • You will be trained on how to use technical equipment in order to ensure
that you can make effective use of the telephone/videophone or other
         web-based live communications.
  • You will be able to discuss all topics within your field and to communicate
fluently over extended periods with only occasional inaccuracy.

Language development assessment
There will be no formal assessment, however you will be encouraged to self-evaluate your signing of various tasks set through the course and you will also receive detailed feedback from your tutor.

Portfolio building
During this phase you will learn more about the procedures required for the NVQ programme.  Your tutor will inform you on how to collect evidence and your paperwork required for your portfolio submission.  Also, during this phase you will also plan and create different types of evidence required for your portfolio.

Following the Portfolio Building days, you will arrange, at a time agreeable to both you and your tutor, four one-to-one tutorials.  The tutorials are designed to analysis and give you feedback on your evidence clips, provide you with support and guidance and help you to prepare your portfolio for the final submission.

Portfolio building assessment
Portfolios will be submitted to Remark! Training to be checked and marked by our assessors.  The internal verifier will then check the assessor’s decision.  The external verifier will sample candidate’s portfolios to ensure that they meet the National Language Standards before successful candidates are awarded the NVQ Certificate qualification.

Entry requirements
Signature Level 3 NVQ Certificate in BSL or equivalent is required.

Students will be formally assessed to determine their ability to meet the required specifications for this course.
