The Hub, Programme 8

Gavin Lilley and Elizabeth Bojas present the last episode of series one of the Hub on Monday 28th November.

Their guest in the studio is Ian Noon, Senior Campaigns Officer with the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) who explains the society’s recent successful legal challenge to the plans of Stoke City Council to make cuts in it’s education service for Deaf children.

Deaf clubs across the United Kingdom are having a tough time.  The Hub visited two Deaf clubs – Leeds and Bristol – which are facing closure because the organisations that own the buildings in which the Deaf clubs take place, have lost council funding and therefore can’t afford to continue.

Unemployment among Deaf people is double the national average. In an attempt to tackle this problem the East Lancashire Deaf Society (ELDS) have set up a restaurant, called ‘The Courthouse’, which will provide employment and training opportunities to young Deaf people to give them the skills and experience they need to work in the catering industry.

Finally, Gavin and Elizabeth take a look back at some of the people, places and events that have made this first series of the Hub so special.

You can also catch up on all previous episodes of the Hub on the British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust’s (BSLBT) website.

BSLBT commission a range of BSL presented programmes, including The Hub, which are shown on the BSL Zone, providing opportunities for Deaf people working on and behind the camera. Visit BSLBT's website for information on how to watch the programmes on television and online.
